The majority of Katakana phrases originate from foreign loan word, with many of these being from English. However, some words stem from other languages too. I have provided some examples below!
Dutch (ホランダご):
コーヒー= Coffee
ダンス=Dance
ビスケット=Biscut
Despite many of these words having strong parallels with English, they introduction to Japan came from the nations interaction with Dutch traders in the 17th and 18th century.
German(ドイツご):
メルヘン=Fairy Tale
ギプス=Plaster Cast
レントゲン=X-Ray
Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan began to engage increased cultural and intellectual exchange with western states such as Germany, resulting in the introduction of the words above to the Japanese language.
As Japan engaged with the outside world to a alrger extent, the need to express new technologies and concepts from abroad also increased, and Katakana allowed for the easy introduction of these terms within Japanese. As such Katakana plays an increibley important role in allowing for the constant integration between the Japanese language and concepts from the outside world
