Iaido is a style of martial arts which focuses on improving the technique, efficiency, and effectiveness with which the practitioner yields their sword out in combat. In practicing Iaido, the practitioner has to maintain various sitting or standing positions, and complete a set of maneuvers with their sword. As of 2000, there were roughly 400 schools in Japan which teach a form Iaido, with the most prominent being the "Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu" and "Muso Shinden Ryu" styles.

The origin of Iaido can be traced back to roughly to 1600, when Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenbou formalized existing styles of "Batto Jutsu, or sword-drawing techniques.  As part of this, he also is credited with pairing such standardization with the notion that the learning of Iaido could help in developing the character of those who practiced it.

There are many central concepts that are emphasized within the practicing of Iaido. "Zanshin", or the visualization of the opponent by the practitioner."Ma-ai" refers to the neutral distance between opposing combatants in which neither has an advantage, and anything can occur."In-Yo", which, similar to the idea of Yin and Yang, promotes peaceful co-existence, and particularly in the case of Iaido, the parallel between life and death. Finally, there is "Jo-Ha-Kyu-", which describes the progression of motions in unsheathing the sword from slow, to medium, to fast."

In learning Iaido, practitioners progress through sets of both formal "dan", and informal "kyu" levels of expertise, with the length of time needed to complete each one differing on the style used. For example, in the "Muso Shinden Ryu" style, it may take around 3 years to complete the first "dan".

For the upcoming demonstration, I am wondering how much work per week or day it takes to master Iaido well. In addition to this, I have learned that due to the extreme sharpness of real kana, practitioners of Iaido begin by using either wooden or dulled blades. As such, how high is the risk of injury? Finally, to what extend is Iaido spreading globally?

どもありがとうございます!
